DARKNESS CONSUMES US
Genre: Horror
Synopsis:
Life is unraveling for 11 year old Will Bron. His younger sister, Madeline, has just succumb to her terminal illness, his parents, Brian and Sarah, are losing their grip on their sanity, and his father’s misguided plan to move the family to a remote, rural home has only left them feeling more isolated from one another, the world, and reality.
As Will struggles to adjust, he finds solace in his faithful Bullmastiff, Nostradamus, and unexpected companionship in his cantankerous, elderly neighbor, Mary. One afternoon, while Will is visiting Mary, his parents make an insane discovery – a young Girl, entombed, but somehow still alive, in the foundation of their new home.
Over the next few days, Will’s parents keep the Girl hidden from Will, all the while making an inexplicable turn for the better, giving Will hope that their family may actually recover from their tragedy. Then, they reveal the Girl to Will, manipulating him into accepting her. But, despite his parents seeming entranced by the strange Girl, Will, and Nostradamus, instinctively know that she is dark and dangerous in ways he doesn’t fully understand.
As the days pass, the Girl becomes more assimilated into their family, his parents’ appearance deteriorates, and Will’s apprehension turns to fear. Then, one morning, he finds his beloved dog torn to pieces in an act of savage violence that Will can’t comprehend. That is, until later that day, when he witnesses the Girl decapitate a local boy in their living room and feast on his blood.
With the truth now undeniable, Will’s parents explain that the bloodshed, as well as their own ongoing blood sacrifices, are all in the name of restoring the Girl’s health and making the family whole again. What’s more, they make it clear that they expect Will to begin making his own sacrifice to the Girl.
On the verge of mental collapse, Will visits Mary one last time. He finally opens up about the death of his sister, and physically and emotionally exhausted, he falls asleep at her home, only to wake up the next morning and discover Mary massacred in much the same way his dog was.
Struck by terror, rage, and the brutal realization that unless he does something about it, he will fall victim to the Girl’s need for blood, one way or another.
In the early morning light, he hurries home, axe in hand, ready for whatever awaits. But, his parents protect the Girl, disarming and cornering Will. And, just as his fate seems sealed, the local sheriff shows up on their doorstep, conducting a house to house search for the missing local boy.
Seeing the condition Brian and Sarah are in, and sensing the danger Will is in, the sheriff barges inside, confronting the parents. But, the Girl pounces, and slaughters the sheriff. Gunshots ring out in the small living room. One hits Brian in the chest. Others tear through the heavy blackout curtains, allowing channels of sunlight into the room, which cause the Girl to wince in pain and reposition as she gluts on the sheriff.
Summoning his last bits of courage and sanity, Will rips down the blackout curtains, bathing the room in sunlight. The Girl howls in agony, as she bursts into flames, and then retreats to the darkness of the basement, setting the house ablaze as she flees.
Now, even as the fire rages around them, Brian runs into the basement after the Girl, and after a last look at Will, Sarah follows.
Will is barely able to escape the blaze. He clambers out onto the lawn and looks on as the flames engulf the house, and the sun shines at his back.
